| In 2007, the Newville Borough Council, in cooperation with the Big Spring School District established a new school resource officer program. The program is the first of its kind for Cumberland County. A Newville Borough Police Officer has been assigned to the Big Spring School District to serve as the School Resource Officer. The SRO is Aaron Nigro. |

The School Resource Officer works every day that school is in session or 180 days per year. The SRO provides security within the school buildings. He investigates criminal activity on school district property and he enforces the posted speed limits within the school zones on the Mt Rock Road and Schoolhouse Road in West Pennsboro Township. The response to the SRO program by the students, faculty and the administrative staff of the Big Spring School District has been extremely positive. Officer Nigro interacts very well with the student body and he is very responsive to the law enforcement needs of the Big Spring School District. The Borough of Newville and the Big Spring School District have operated under an Intergovernmental Cooperation Agreement for nearly twenty years. The Borough of Newville provides contracted police services to the Big Spring School District thanks to the cooperation and support of the West Pennsboro Township Board of Supervisors and the North Newton Township Board of Supervisors.
